Rep. Bass Statement on International Mandela Day
(Washington, D.C.) – Today Congresswoman Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Ranking Member of the Africa Subcommittee released the following statement on the 95th birthday of Nelson Mandela, former president of the Republic of South Africa:
“Today, the world celebrates the life and legacy of the global leader and icon, Nelson Mandela. For more the two decades as a free man and for nearly three decades imprisoned because of his unwavering commitment to human rights and equality, Nelson Mandela has taught us the meaning of self-sacrifice.
“President Mandela personally inspired me to understand that although the struggle for social and economic justice might take many years, it was my responsibility to continue that fight and if he could keep his focus on these values, then I certainly can also.
“So on this special day, we dedicate ourselves to volunteerism of all kinds. In 17 cities around the United States events are taking place – from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles and from New York City to Miami. It was President Mandela’s wish that on his birthday we dedicate ourselves to something bigger and work to make our world a more equitable, fair and peaceful place.
“I wish President Mandela a speedy recovery and hope that this birthday is celebrated with close family and friends. Today, we celebrate for all that he has given to all of us everywhere.
“Happy 95th birthday President Mandela!”
