TransAfrica and BloomScreen Present: The Story of Lover's Rock

On February 26

TransAfrica and BloomScreen Present:

The Story of Lover's Rock

Join BloomBars and TransAfrica with the presentation of The Story of Lover's Rock (2011, 97 min), by Menelik Shabazz.

Lover's Rock, often dubbed 'romantic reggae' is a uniquely black British sound that developed in London in the late '70s and '80s against a backdrop of riots, racial tension and sound systems

Date: February 26, 2013 7:00 - 9:00PM

Venue: BloomBars, 3222 11th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20010

RSVP @ http://tinyurl.com/lovers-rock-rsvp

Live musical performances, comedy, dance, interviews and archival footage shed light on the music and the generation that embraced it. Lover's Rock allowed young people to experience intimacy and healing through a dance known as 'scrubbing'- providing a coping mechanism for what was happening on the streets. Lover's Rock developed into a successful sound with national UK hits and helped bridge the multi-cultural gap that polarized the times.

After our screening, we will have a Q&A discussion, moderated by Mwiza Munthali - the Public Outreach Director of TransAfrica.

Free popcorn and refreshments provided.

Proceeds will benefit both TransAfrica and BloomBars.  Your support of TransAfrica will help amplify the voice of millions of people in Africa and throughout the Diaspora.  Gifts to BloomBars helps support its programs and work in the community.

Date: January 29, 2012 - 7-9pm
Venue: BloomBars, 3222 11th Street, NW
Washington, DC 20010

Join BloomBars and TransAfrica as we remember the death of Patrice Lumumba 52 years ago with the presentation of The Assassination of Patrice Lumumba (2000, 45 min), by Thomas Giefer.

The Assassination of Patrice Lumumba examines the story of slain African leader, Patrice Lumumba, who was the first elected Prime Minister of the Congo (Kinshasa).

RSVP @ http://tinyurl.com/lumumba-rsvp

While seen as a hero by fellow Africans, Lumumba was perceived as a threat by many in Europe and the United States. A few months after becoming prime minister, of the newly independent Republic of the Congo (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), he was overthrown by a military coup, inspired by the West, and then killed on January 17, 1961. No one was ever charged with this crime.

After our screening, we will have a discussion with a representative of Friends of the Congo, and with Mwiza Munthali, the Public Outreach Director of TransAfrica.

Suggested Donation: $10.
