Across the African continent, false claims that homosexuality is “un-African” fuel violence and discrimination against LGBTI individuals for their sexual orientation and gender identity. Attend this frank discussion and book signing, with Dr. Sylvia Tamale. This groundbreaking volume African Sexualities: A Reader, the first of its kind written by African activists themselves, aims to inspire a new generation of students and teachers to study, reflect and gain fresh and critical insights into the complex issues of gender and sexuality. It opens a space – particularly for young people – to think about African sexualities in different ways.

Dr. Sylvia Tamale is a Ugandan feminist lawyer and former Dean of Law at Makerere University in Uganda. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Makerere University, a Masters from Harvard Law School and a PhD in Sociology and Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Tamale founded and serves as coordinator of the Law, Gender & Sexuality Research Project, and was also instrumental in introducing the Policy on Sexual Harassment at Makerere University.
