SUDAN

Sudan has been riddled with conflict since independence in 1956, with the country splitting from South Sudan in June 2011. There have been two rounds of north-south civil wars that cost the lives of 1.5 million people in addition to the continuing conflict in the western region of Darfur, which has driven two million people from their homes and killed more than 200,000.

Less well-known is the conflict in the East, where the Beja Congress and Free Lions rebel movements have waged low-intensity conflict since 1997, alleging that the government has marginalized the region politically, socially, and economically. The Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement was signed in October 2006, which lays out a framework for rehabilitation and development. The United Nations has had presence in Sudan through the African Union/ United Nations Hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID) and the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNAMIS), which has recently been transitioned into the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNAMISS).

TransAfrica works with international networks attempting to provide solidarity to the people of Sudan.
