Topic: The Black Left on Gender & Sexuality. Africa Now! continues the third installment from the series "Black Left in the 21st Century" presented at Sankofa Video, Books & Cafe. Africa Now! features the panel discussion entitled “Black Left in the 21st Century: The Black Left on Gender & Sexuality” which occurred on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Sankofa Video, Books & Cafe. The discussion explored the historic and contemporary role of patriarchy and hetero-sexism in the Black community and society in general—connecting capitalism, colonialism, sexism and homophobia.
The panelists included: Mr. Ewuare Osayande poet, author, teacher, community activist; Dr. Greg Thomas, Associate Professor in Department of English at Tufts University; Ms. Meron Wondwosen of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement-DC; and Ms. Sonja Woods Doctoral Student in the History Department at Howard University and Graduate Research Assistant for the Howard University Republic of South Africa Project. The moderator was Mr. Benjamin J. Woods, Howard University Doctoral Student (Political Science), and community organizer/activist and key organizer of the discussion.
